Nearest the pins went to Michael on the second and 12th, whilst Marg Lauer took home the 15th hole trophy.

A couple of additional highlights from the day’s play came with Andrew Flanagan scoring an eagle on the 279 metre, par 4, 9th hole, when his drive landed just a metre from the pin, whilst at the other end of the ability scale, the club welcomed three newcomers to the sport when Raj, Ram and Ranou from the Nyah West IGA Xpress ventured out for their first ever game of golf, and they all enjoyed the experience whilst showing good potential.

This Sunday, the ladies will play stroke for their September monthly medal, whilst the men likewise will contest their monthly medal playing against par.

Badminton

Senior

THE penultimate night’s play in badminton 2016 was a cracker, with three close contests.

Family Goals and Date Rowls played the B2 match-up.

Barry Date and Mark Rowlands gave Date Rowls the best of starts, when they posted a 13 point win over Vaughn Catton and Steve Taylor.

The Family side returned fire, with mother-son duo, Linda Taylor and Nick Higginbottom too strong for youngsters Chloe Date and Megan Rowlands.

Taylor’s experience in clutch matches boosted her side to a three point lead overall.

Barry and Chloe Date put the Rowls back in front with a four point win over Catton and Linda Taylor, and Mark and Megan Rowlands gained a further two points in their win over Steve Taylor and Higginbottom, so that the Rowls went into the final two sets with a three point margin.

Catton and Higginbottom retrieved the Family’s hopes in the second last of the sets with a 17 point victory.

By this stage the pressure was telling on all players, with Barry Date’s loss a rare occurrence for the season.

However on the other court, Mark Rowlands put on a clinic in long drop shots, and Chloe Date’s net play brought her several crucial winning points, as the Rowls pair out-played the Taylors to the tune of a 40-26 win.

With the points score tied on 207 apiece, Date Rowls got over the line by four sets to two, to post the closest finish for the association since the adoption of the four player format several years ago.

The B1 edition was a second cracker, with the sides level on sets, and a mere five point margin to Raging Rackets over Unfit Bits.

Peter Stanton and Adam Williamson got the Rackets off to a flyer, with a crushing 24 point victory, and it looked likely that the raging favourite for the title was on track for an easy win.

However no-one told Josh Scott and Brendan Gibbs they had no hope, and their win by 17 points kept Unfit Bits in the contest.

Stanton and Glen Whitelaw won the third for the Rackets, but were pushed to the limit by Ryan Rowlands and Scott, who did a great job to keep the more experienced pair to a one point margin.

Gibbs continued to dominate, pairing up with Jake Fedele to boost Unfit Bits to the lead with a 12 point win.

Stanton completed a very strong performance when he and Lauren Faliszewski regained the lead for the Rackets, and although Fedele and Scott won the final set by five points for Unfit Bits, the team fell five points short overall.

In A grade, Avengers proved it’s possible to come from lower on the ladder when it dominated the final two sets to win by 31 points over a gallant Sixers team.

Trevor Rowlands and Matt Heffer got Sixers away with a six point win over Colin Free, who had a conspicuous green strapping on a dodgy calf strain, and Barry Dow, who, unusually, looked a bit off the pace.

Nengah Sudiarsa and Rory Toyib brought Avengers back within two, when they beat Andrew Sartori and Michael Martin.

The middle two sets were a true arm wrestle. Avengers’ Dow and Sudiarsa won by two points from Rowlands and Sartori, and Sixers struck back with Heffer and Martin scoring a one point win over Free and Toyib.

With the match firmly on the line, Avengers drew on all its experience.

Dow and Toyib, and Free and Sudiarsa, all held their composure to record a pair of 40-24 wins when it counted, and Avengers will progress to the grand final next week.

Grand final draw is:

A grade. What’s Our Name v Avengers

B grade. Raging Rackets v Date Rowls

Junior

FLAMING Gophers proved too strong for Blue Mirage, winning all but one set. Gemma Saul and Blayne Martin were undefeated for the winners.

Zoe Magnusson was best for Mirage. Hot Chocolate posted an 18 point win over Green Coats. Ben Sartori won his three for Hot Chocolate, and Nick McDowall and newcomer Breanna Dickson both won a pair.

Jasmine Stacey won two for Green Coats in a closely contested match.

In the Beginners group, first timer, Lilly Noles, won all her sets to finish top of the group.

Hayley Dickson dropped one set for second place, and Asher Stewart came third.

In the closest set, Dickson and Stewart beat Jake McDowall and Luca Delmenico by two points.

Next Tuesday is the final night for the junior competition.

All players are advised that there will be presentations at the end of play — about 7pm.
