Swan Hill police will be armed with screwdrivers tomorrow as they combat numberplate thefts in the region.
During Operation Safe Plate, motorists will be provided with a free set of one-way security screws at the eastern end of McCallum Street, next to the clock tower car park, from 9am to 11.30am.
Swan Hill police Leading Senior Constable Andrew Downes said although numberplate thefts in the Swan Hill Police Service Area weren’t as high as in other rural areas, motorists shouldn’t take a chance.
“Criminals steal plates to use them at petrol drive-offs, home invasions and toll evasions. When that happens, it is very difficult for police to identify vehicles used in alleged crimes,” Ldg Sen-Constable Downes said.
