Swan Hill Rural City Council’s delegate to a regional municipalities association has welcomed calls for more consistent road funding, saying pressures on council to deliver services had been reduced following rates capping.
Cr Gary Norton said the recent deluge in north-west Victoria had seen potholed and damaged roads, as the North West Municipalities Association (NWMA) announced road funding as a key priority over the next 12 months.
The association comprises eight municipalities in west and north-west Victoria, including Swan Hill.
“There are many highways funded by VicRoads across this vast area of the north-west, but there are many more sealed and unsealed roads funded by the local councils,” NWMA chair Judi Harris said.
“To properly manage these assets, councils rely on regular state and federal funds, as well as their own contributions.
