Authorities issue advice for cleaning up after floods

Police and emergency service are urging residents in flood affected areas to be safe when cleaning up both during floods and after the flood waters have receded.

Deputy State Emergency Operations Controller, Acting Assistant Commissioner Kyle Stewart, said while the floods may not be over yet, some areas are starting the process of recovery.

He also warns that the clean up process can present just as many dangers as the flood waters themselves.

“The affects of the clean up can be just as dangerous as the floods themselves and we are appealing to the communities impacted by the floods to take all precautions and listen to advice of the emergency service agencies,” he said.

Some key issues residents should observe during the clean-up process are:

HOUSEHOLD FIRE SAFETY FOR FLOOD RECOVERY

In the event of fire, leave the house and call triple-0 and ask for Fire.

HEALTH ADVICE FOR FLOOD CLEAN UP

Further information including personal and household safety tips and health fact sheets are available on the NSW Government’s Health website

Members of the public can also visit that website for a range of flood-related information. For all other emergencies, the public are advised to contact Triple-0.

Authorities urge people to check on the impact the floods have had on family and neighbours and to share this information with anyone who does not currently have access to technology.
