Fifteen candidates’ speak out

THE Swan Hill bridge, retaining youth in the region, upgrades to sporting facilities, social engagement and business growth were just some of the issues addressed by candidates at a forum on Tuesday night.

More than 40 people gathered at the Swan Hill Town Hall to hear what issues, ideas and personal experiences the 16 candidates will bring to Swan Hill Rural City Council, if elected at the October 22 local government elections.

At The Guardian’s council election forum, which was moderated by general manager Rob Duffield, each candidate was given five minutes to present their case before a 30-minute question time from the floor.

Candidates were asked to publicly declare their preferred option for a new bridge, what governance experience they brought to the table, how they would attract new businesses and industries and balance their working life with council duties.

The loudest applause went to former mayor and Central Ward councillor Greg Cruickshank, who decided not to re-stand for family reasons.

“This forum is really beneficial for the community to hear from candidates. I think we have a really worthwhile group there we are going to select from,” Mr Cruickshank said.

“The selection is going to be hard because there are a couple of stand outs in there already.

“It is hard decision to make [to stand for council]. You do have to have a passion about making a difference…it’s a very big learning curve.”

As for re-standing in 2020, Mr Cruickshank said “never say never”.
