Lady Flyers back in action

SWAN Hill Lady Flyers are back and ready to take the 2016/17 Country Basketball League (CBL) by storm after a much improved season saw the side miss the finals by just a few wins.

The ladies will hit the court for their first match at home against the Shepparton Gators on Sunday in their second year of competition since being reinstated as a club.

The coaching staff have already identified the need to post early season wins, especially in front of their home crowd, with much of the roster returning to the court this season.

Despite having a disrupted preseason due to netball finals, the ladies in the side have talent and are raring to go.|

Returning from a stellar season in 2016 are the tenacious guards Kelsey McCoy and Laura Anderson.

Both players lead by example plus their competitive nature is always evident and exciting to watch.

The all-round skills of Maddie Jeans at both ends of the court will be invaluable, and with Mollie Quin, Olivia Jones and Tess Denham showing great intensity the side is looking good heading into the first game.

Zoe Fuller’s ability to play inside the paint and her good range shot from the perimeter adds versatility to the Flyers team.

New players this year include Jaya Blandthorn who returns to basketball after being out for a season due to injury.

Her anticipation in defence has always been a trademark as a junior which regularly converts into scoring options for her and her team mates which will be welcomed by the team.

Jenna Jenkins returns to Swan Hill from Geelong; a player who dominated in her junior years in Swan Hill.

Jenkins will slot in nicely as a power forward with the ability to get to the basket for points and also can knock down the uncontested shot.|

Courtney Duff has joined the Swan Hill Flyers after playing against them last season in the CBL with Echuca.

Her dribble penetration game and steady shooting brings another dimension to the group.

Last season, the Flyers took five wins, losing 10, but were the third best attacking side with 61 points per game.

Tip off on Sunday will be at 1pm.
