Parents are being encouraged to read more books to their pre-school aged children.
A new campaign was launched at the State Library last Wednesday encouraging parents to read 1000 books to their child from birth until they begin school.
Swan Hill Rural City Council’s Cultural Development and Libraries Manager Camille Cullinan says the campaign is a fantastic initiative to encourage parents and carers to read more to their children.
“Research has shown that children learn a lot more in the first five years of their life so the fact that they’re having stories read to them will help develop their language, learning and cognitive skills.
“It will really develop them much better prior to them starting school,” said Ms Cullinan.
She said the Swan Hill Regional Library is registered to be part of the program so they will be participating in it.
“There will be forms available from the library to register so people can keep up with how many books have been read and we’ll also be providing milestone rewards along the way.”
