A small fire in the front garden of St Luke’s Anglicare on McCallum Street on Monday afternoon has prompted a renewal of the fire safety message.
One witness told The Guardian that the fire came out of nowhere and lit up the bark-filled garden in an instant.
The CFA are unsure about the cause but used the incident to further stress the importance of fire safety as we get closer to the start of fire season.
Swan Hill Fire Brigade captain Dennis Turner said with one of the driest fire seasons expected it won’t take much to ignite a fire this year.
“We just want people to be more aware of fire danger, especially small fires that can quickly turn big in an instant,” he said.
“Throwing a cigarette butt from a car window is an offence not many people know about; same as non-supervised control burn-offs.”
