Novak’s gift arrives with Woodbridge

FORMER Swan Hill “Mayor” Novak Djokovic’s Australian Open win has allowed his “constiuents” to lay their hands on the men’s trophy, which will come to the Mallee tomorrow.

After Swan Hill won a national competition to choose their champion for the tournament, they picked the ‘Mallee Djoker’ and made him mayor during the two-week event.

Following his win, residents hoped he would attend the region but after a spirited campaign it was not to be.

Instead 22-time Grand Slam champion Todd Woodbridge will bring the silverware with him tomorrow.

On top of the visit, a range of activities will be held while the Swan Hill Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club will open four brand new hardcourts.

Tennis legend Woodbridge said he couldn’t wait to attend the event tomorrow from 12noon.

“I’m looking forward to coming to Swan Hill and bringing the Australian Open trophies to one of Australia’s most tennis loving towns,” he said.

“Novak was touched by all of the support he received from those who travelled from Swan Hill to the Australian Open 2016 draw, and was thrilled to be announced as honorary mayor.

It was great to see how engaged the town was with the Free Tennis Days campaign — from the drone shoot to the art competition.

“This Saturday is going to be action-packed; there will be family friendly activities, competitions and junior exhibition matches.

I’m looking forward to bringing the trophies and hosting a coaching clinic. I hope to see the whole town there.”

Swan Hill Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club president Peter Morrison expressed his excitement that the event could show off tennis to the region.
