Take a stand this White Ribbon Day

Men are being encouraged to take a oath to never harm women and children as part of this year’s White Ribbon Day, this Friday.

White Ribbon Day is a national day for the prevention of violence against women and end the stigma around domestic violence.

This year, White Ribbon Australia is asking men to stand up, speak out and act for the women in their lives.

The message is that “violence against women is a man’s issue too”.

One in three women have experienced physical and/or sexual abuse perpetrated by someone known to them.

On average, one woman is killed every week in Australia as a result of domestic violence.

This Friday, the White Ribbon Foundation is asking communities across the country to stand up, speak out and act to prevent violence against women.

A health promotion officer with Mallee District Aboriginal Services, Djallarna Hamilton said the day was important in allowing people to show their support for those suffering through family violence.

“White Ribbon Day is about losing the stigma around family and domestic violence,” she said.

“A lot of women feel embarrassed or weak that they’re suffering through this.

“We want people to know that’s it’s okay to ask for support or help when you need it,” she said.
