An experienced consultant with more than 20 years’ experience says Balranald council should review its policies every four years after the municipality was put on notice to improve its governance and finances.
Council was ordered to spend $15,000 and appoint a temporary advisor after NSW Local Government Minister Paul Toole gave notice to the municipality of his intention to issue a performance improvement order for what he believed was poor governance and a lack of financial stability.
General manager Aaron Drenovski said council was still awaiting a response from the government after mayor Leigh Byron had acknowledged the notice in writing.
The Office of Local Government prepared a report on financial and governance failings at the council after a review of its practices and a visit on July 19.
“While the council had indicated it is dealing with the issues raised, the range and seriousness of the matters led me to conclude a performance improvement order may be warranted in the future to ensure these problems are fixed,” Mr Toole said.
