Fish put the bite on anglers

Fish by the bucketload is the catch cry of Swan Hill tackle proprietor Jim Credlin.

Credlin said there were stacks of Murray cod and golden perch caught locally between the Christmas and New Year break.

Lake Charm continues to fish well for golden perch and redfin on bait and small vibe lures.

Similar catches were made in the channels off Fish Point Road with a few carp mixed in.

Some good-sized yabbies have also been running in the local channels with most managing a feed.

Remember the channels are classified as Victorian waters and therefore fall under Victorian fishing rules and regulations.

In the Murray River there have been numerous reports of Murray cod Credlin said, with several good sized fish caught on bait and lures.

Upstream on the Murray River, near Pental Island, one angler trolling StumpJumper lures up the middle of the river landed two solid cod, both measuring over the 90cm mark.

Several other smaller cod were landed at this location also.

Credlin said another angler trolling a spinnerbait just up from the Swan Hill Road Bridge managed a nice cod while others who fished with bait also landed several smaller cod and a few solid golden perch.

The Little Murray has golden perch on bait and, like most other locations as many carp as you can catch. Credlin said all up the fishing was really good with most tourists and locals alike more than happy with the results.

At Boundary Bend on the Murray, a few reports of golden perch on bait have been filtering through.

Carp are about in good numbers and the river is starting to clear.

Further along the Murray, Mildura angler Stephen Traeger has been catching some nice golden perch on small vibes and spinnerbaits near Caradoc.

Traeger also said he caught a small Murray cod but it was the only one he had seen this season.

Anglers fishing bait have also been catching perch and heaps of carp in this area.

At Wentworth perch have been caught on bait and lures mostly upstream of the Loch.

In the Darling River near Pooncarie cod are still being caught on bait with yabbies working well followed by grubs and scrub-worms.

Good numbers of yabbies have been reported at Lake Cullulleraine and have only really started moving this past week or so.

Hopefully the bite will only get better as the water continues to warm and just like the fish there will be yabbies by the bucket load for all to catch.
