Study uncovers diet link to mental health

A STUDY conducted at Melbourne University has found a mainly plant-based Mediterranean diet can help alleviate symptoms of mental illness such as depression.

Swan Hill District Health dietitian and health promotion officer Chanel Relf said a study by the Food and Mood Centre, run by Deakin University found that a third of participants on a Mediterranean diet reduced their symptoms. She said diet played a partial role in mental health risk management.

“There is strong evidence between a balanced, plant-based diet and reducing the risk of mental health illnesses,” she told The Guardian.
