The first large-scale solar farms in Victoria will be built on the edge of Sunraysia in the second half of this year.
Overland Sun Farming announced its $500 million plans to build a solar farm at Wemen, south of Robinvale, and at Yatpool and Iraak, south of Mildura.
The Melbourne-based Australian firm, in conjunction with Island Green Power, has completed the planning process and has grid connection agreements for its projects in north-west Victoria.
They will be ground-mounted solar photovoltaic arrays with capacity for more than 320 megawatts of solar energy – enough to power more than 600,000 homes in Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo.
The solar farms will produce clean green energy from January next year.
Overland Sun Farming managing director Brett Thomas said solar was Australia’s next energy opportunity.
