Like many young people in rural towns, living away from home to study is an expensive undertaking.
La Trobe University student Kate Norton, 19, who is studying primary education, packed up her life last year and moved 280km from Balranald to Bendigo.
“Because of the full-time study, my only option is to work on weekends,” Ms Norton told The Guardian.
Ms Norton works at a coffee shop, and relies on her penalty pay packet to get ahead in life.
“The cuts will affect me badly,” she said.
“This now means I have to find more work and not focus as much on my studies.
