Fundraising success for goat race

Balranald’s most unique race, the Billy Goat Cup, was held on Saturday with great success.

About 350 people packed Balranald’s Greenham Park for the event that included 11 goat races, a cow pad lotto competition and carp tossing.

Now in its third year, the event is a major fundraiser for the Balranald Football Netball Club.

The event saw 100 goats take to the starting line, with 10 heats throughout the day.

Event organiser Tony Conway said the day was very enjoyable.

“One of the goats did escape which was very entertaining,” Mr Conway said.

“It jumped the fence and ran onto the footy field with 20 kids chasing after it.

“They run about 60 metres.

“Most ran pretty well, some bucked around a bit.”

Alongside the goat races, there were a number of activities to keep the crowds entertained.

“The tug-of-war was a lot of fun,” noting their was some friendly rivalry among local families.

“The carp tossing and dog jumps were both very popular too.”
