Police seize drugs

A Swan Hill woman has been arrested and charged with cultivating drugs after police seized plants last Thursday.

Police seized three plants and 2.3kg of cannabis from the Chapman Street address.

The 56-year-old woman was charged with cultivating cannabis.

She will appear in court at a later date.

Meanwhile, a major drug operation has taken place within Moulamein over the holiday period.

Police from the Deniliquin Local Area Command, State Drug Dog Unit and Southern Region took part in the operation which focused on the transportation of prohibited drugs into the area.

The operation coincided with the ConFest alternative festival which was held in Moulamein across the Easter long weekend.

Four drug detection dogs and 16 police were deployed to two locations during last Wednesday and Thursday, stopping vehicles in the area for breath tests, drug dog scanning and vehicle and/or person searches as required.

By Thursday afternoon, police had conducted 689 breath tests, 45 vehicle searches and 85 searches of individuals.

As a result, 11 people were charged with possessing a prohibited drug while a further 15 were cautioned.

Inspector John Aichinger said the operation was very successful.

“Police are aware of the lengths people go to, to secrete prohibited drugs on their bodies or in their vehicles, hence why we utilise the special skills of drug detection dogs,” Inspector Aichinger said.

However, he said one detection was particularly noteworthy.

“If you’re going to hide prohibited drugs, and think that placing them in a bag of tasty dog treats called ‘Schmackos’ is going to achieve your goal, you would be sadly mistaken,” he said.

“The fact that the offender didn’t have a dog on board, probably didn’t assist them in their endeavours.”
