Residents miss companion

Alcheringa Hostel’s beloved resident dog Ally passed away last month after a short struggle with her health.

Since her passing a few weeks ago, the Maltese Shih Tzu cross has been greatly missed by both staff and residents.

Alcheringa administration employee Robyn Roberts said Ally was a part of the family at the hostel.

“Ally came to us in 2005 when she was just a puppy,” Ms Roberts said.

“She didn’t belong to anyone in particular, she was everyone’s dog.”

Ms Roberts said Ally had a calming influence on the residents.

“A lot of our residents love animals,” she said.

“Ally was one of those dogs who could tell when someone was sick or sad.

“She was always a good pick me up.”

Both residents and visitors alike enjoyed Ally’s company.

“She would often sit on people’s laps or sit on wheelchairs for the resident’s daily walks around the garden,” she said.

Ally had been unwell for a few weeks before her passing and suffered from heart murmurs.

Ms Roberts said the the hostel had considered getting another dog, but said Ally was irreplaceable.

“It will be very hard to replace her. It would have to be an exceptional dog,” she said.

“We have been considering getting a seeing eye dog who didn’t pass the grade.
