BREAKING: Boy charged over church blaze

A boy has been charged over a fire at the former Uniting Church hall in Swan Hill last Tuesday.

The Murlong Street church was destroyed in the suspicious blaze.

Detective Leading Senior Constable Brian Taylor said that no one was inside the hall at the time of the fire around 1.15pm.

The 15-year-old Swan Hill boy was charged on Thursday with criminal damage by arson.

He was bailed and will appear at Swan Hill Children’s Court at a later date.

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control.

“We have had investigators up today, we have done some examinations and they will give us their findings but there is no obvious cause,” Lead Sen Cons Taylor previously told The Guardian

“With the power turned off and the place being vacant, we are treating it as suspicious.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Swan Hill police on 5036 1600.
