Strong support for LGBTI community.

A strong crowd of almost 100 people turned out to show support for International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia at Cafe Allure on May 17. The event surpassed organiser, Swan Hill District Health, health promotion officer Hayden Collins expectations ten fold.

“It’s just fantastic to see so many turn out to share afternoon tea and show support for the LGBTI community,” he said.

“We have a good turn out both from service providers and from the local community.

“I really would have been happy if we had six people come so to see this many supportive faces is just amazing.”

Victoria Police, CFA and SES were just some of the services who attended for a cuppa and a chat along with staff from the community services sector including Anglicare and Mallee Family Care. There were also a strong contingent from the LGBTI community who said they were delighted by the response.

Tegan Murray attended with her parents Dennis and Ann who came as a show of support to their daughter.

“There’s a lot more people here than I ever expected,” Tegan said.

“Cafe Allure does a great job to support change in the community.

“I think the younger generation have a different viewpoint on the issue and as they grow older they’re able to influence change in society.”

Her parents gushed with pride as they spoke about their daughter and their unconditional love.

“I’m 72 and we think it’s great she’s been able to come out and be herself,” Dennis said.

“She’s had enough to deal with in the past, she’s had battles with depression so being able to be open about this is one less thing for her to have to worry about.

“I’ve always told my kids they have a home with us and that we would support them no matter what, so for us, it’s really not a big deal, she’s just our daughter.”
