Change ahead: New Swan Hill mayor to be elected

SWAN Hill will have a new mayor next month, with Les McPhee indicating he won’t re-contest the top civic position at the mayoral election.

Cr McPhee has held the position for five years on council, but said it was time for him to step aside.

“I’m not putting my hand up this term for mayor, I think I need a break, a little more family time and a little bit more time for myself,” he told The Guardian.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed the role and have been privileged to hold it for the length of time I have.”

The outgoing mayor declined to name any contenders for the position.

“At this point in time, I’m not able to say [who has put their hands up] but I have heard a couple mention they would like the role,” he said.

Councillors will have the chance to nominate for the position at a meeting on November 13.

Deputy mayor Ann Young told The Guardian she was “thinking about” putting her hand up for the position.

“I’m still thinking about it, but I probably will,” she said.

“I’ve lived in Swan Hill all my life, I was born here and I feel like I have quite a lot to contribute.”
