Junior tennis season winds up

By Naomi Bowd

What a season we have had in junior tennis this year.

We began the summer by moving from Friday nights to Saturday mornings which was a great success and more family friendly.

It also meant we were able to access and utilise the tennis and coaching skills of one of our long-time members Adam Laughlin, who helped out all the players from beginners through to the more advanced junior players.

We lowered our membership fees and offered some free lessons for the month of October that were a real hit for many of our new players at the club.

Right from the start it was great to see new and old faces arriving and getting back into the game.

Throughout the season we had help from our local legends in Danny Gardner, Chris Mitchell, Christian Devlin and Caleb Beggs who have all helped out with some coaching on Friday nights.

We were also lucky enough to appoint Beggs as a more permanent tennis coach, offering group clinics as well as individual lessons and we look forward to seeing more of this next season.

Each week we continued to have 50 to 60 players on the courts which was fantastic for the club to have so many up-and-coming players.

The players played for points for their team each week with every game won and were able to add bonus points to this when we introduced a couple of ‘Bring a Friend’ days.

All of this helped their teams to be in the running for the championship trophy at the end of the season.

We even had many of our friends decide to join after playing on our amazing courts at ‘Bring a Friend’ days.

We finished off the season with a fun games’ day followed by a barbecue and presentations.

The championship team was McCrae which consisted of Sam, Cooper, Amber, James X, Chelsea T, Charles, Amahlia, James Mc, Brayden and Kathleen.

We also had individual winners for each team, these players scored the most points for their team, they were Mollie, Chloe, Meg, Tess, Reuben, Josh and Sam.

Thanks to all our families for supporting our junior tennis program and helping out in the kiosk, on the courts and with the many tournaments we have held.

Maybe one day we will see your child out there playing in the ProTour and making their way to the top of the tennis ladder.

We would also like to thank our amazing sponsors who kindly donated prizes for our awards each week.
