THIS was a different company than the belly-landing last week, but another pilot had a close call when he took out a powerline this week.
The plane kept flying but I think over 40 farms lost their power.
Two mishaps with planes in a week. That should be our share for the next 20 years or so.
Coots by the hundred
I FELT a bit out of it. Everyone was having trouble with coots in their rice and I had not seen one.
Mind you, with all of the rain, I haven’t been around the rice much since Christmas.
I noticed a few in the bottom bay this week. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I do not have access to guns anymore.
So, I told my young fella to have a look at them.
“Got some good news and some bad news,” was the report back.
The good news was that he had managed to shoot about 15 of the rotten mongrel things.
The bad news was that he was still chasing the other couple of hundred or more around the rice paddock.
I knew it would come, but they have turned up in their hundreds and the numbers are still building.
These mongrel things can turn a 10-tonne crop into bare water in no time.
We do not know where they go to when they are not here, but they are back with a vengeance.
Check your hay stacks
JUST another reminder, with the unseasonal rain this year on uncovered hay stacks.
There is a danger that they will get soaked and overheat.
Spontaneous combustion it is called and there have been a few hay stacks going up in flames this year.
The Moulmein Fire Brigade has an infrared camera that can pinpoint hot spots.
We have never actually found a hot hay stack with it yet after testing a few.
If you have a hay stack that you think is getting hot, give me a yell and we will see what we can do about it.
I would rather be testing a stack than trying to put the fire out in it.
Bowls returns
WE are back into the pennant season this week.
Division 1 is away to Lake Boga and Division 3 is at home to Tooleybuc.
Do not forget your smoko team. Tooleybuc looked after us last time we were over there.
Please try to get your championship games up to date. Do not wait for your opposition to ring you. Ring them and get it over with. Time is running out. Division 1 will be in the finals. Division 3 still has a good chance of making finals as well.
River levels
THE Edward River is dropping at around 1.7m and 1600 megalitres per day.
It should continue dropping as water use for our rice crops continue to rise as the rain has eased off.
Still some good fish getting landed upstream from Moulamein.
