Flyers have a say in finals picture

THE Swan Hill Flyers will finish their 2023 CBL North West campaign at home on Sunday, with both the men’s and women’s teams to host their last matches of the season.

The finals are out of the equation for both sides and Sunday’s fixtures will draw the curtain on a season largely impacted by injuries for both Flyers outfits.

While Swan Hill’s men’s team will host the Castlemaine Cannons in their only match for the weekend, the Lady Flyers will hit the road to play the Melton Thoroughbreds on Saturday before returning to Swan Hill to host the Bacchus Marsh Lions on Sunday.

The Thoroughbreds and the Lions are locked in a battle for fourth spot, the last in the CBL North West playoffs, so it’s the perfect opportunity for the Flyers to have a big say on this year’s finals series.

With a one win, seven loss record, the Lady Flyers will go in as underdogs, having also lost both matches to Melton and Bacchus Marsh earlier this season.

The men’s team will face Castlemaine for the only time this season, with the Cannons sitting second on the ladder, having lost just one match this season.

The Flyers will go in full of confidence off the back of two strong performances last weekend. A hard-fought loss to Echuca preceded a six-point win over Maryborough last Sunday.

To upset the Cannons, the Flyers will need big games from Lachlan Gardner, who goes into the match in form after shooting 35 points against the Blazers, as well as key players Lachlan Somerville and Matthew Gardner.

The Lady Flyers will begin Sunday’s home fixture against Bacchus Marsh at noon, with the men’s match against Castlemaine to follow from 2pm at Swan Hill Stadium.
