Lake Boga silo art complete

Lake Boga’s newest attraction is now complete, but no special unveiling is needed to share it with the community.

The GrainCorp silo art sits in full view of passing traffic on the Murray Valley Highway and is unabashedly a larger-than-life nod to everything Lake Boga.

Artist Tim Bowtell set down his brushes on Monday, three-and-a-half weeks after starting the giant tribute.

The Lake Boga project was Mr Bowtell’s fourth silo work and third with GrainCorp, but he noted each project has been very different and unique to its community.

“With this kind of canvas, you’re really hoping to offer a snapshot of what the town is about,” Mr Bowtell said.

“Lake Boga Inc consulted with the community and really started thinking about which assets captured the essence of Lake Boga and its people.

“There was a lot of focus around the lake and its history with the Catalinas during WWII and its current importance as a recreation space.

“It is all bought together by the colours that are reminiscent of sunrise and sunset out here.”

The project was funded by the Foundation for Regional and Rural Renewal (FRRR) in partnership with Swan Hill Rural City Council.

Mayor Les McPhee said the mural showcased the historic Catalina aircraft and renowned aviator George Urquhart Allan (Scotty Allan).

“Set against a picturesque Lake Boga sunset, the artwork portrays the region’s history and environment, while also highlighting the various recreational activities like water skiing and sailing, along with a prominent pelican,” he said.

“It’s a great way to showcase the impressive history of Lake Boga.

“The mural complements the region and will promote the area’s history and of course, the Catalina Flying Boat Museum to visitors coming to our region.”

Cr McPhee extended his thanks and congratulations to all those involved in bringing this project to life.

For Mr Bowtell, working in the Mallee heat was not as much a challenge as battling strong winds.

“I could handle the heat and flies, but a few times the wind got really gusty, and it was a little nerve racking up there,” he said.

“But overall, the project went very smoothly, and in fact it is finished ahead of schedule and has exceeded my expectations.

“It has been an absolute joy to spend time in the community meeting the locals.”

Cr McPhee paid tribute to the dedicated team who worked to bring the project to life.

“Large-scale projects like this need a team of dedicated and skilled people behind the scenes,” he said.

“Several stakeholders have been involved including Lake Boga Incorporated, Graincorp, Victrack, Vline, Department of Transport, council officers and of course the community.

“Well done to all those involved.”
