Maroons get their man

NULLAWIL will have a new voice at the helm next season in former Strathfieldsaye and Colbinabbin premiership coach Darryl Wilson.

Wilson will take over as coach from Brett Barker, the 2022 premiership coach who announced he would step down after his team’s 14-point grand final loss to Sea Lake Nandaly.

Wilson has an impressive CV from the past decade in the Bendigo Football League.

He coached Strathfieldsaye to 2014, 2015 and 2017 premierships, led Kangaroo Flat and was an assistant with the Bendigo Bombers VFL side.

Nullawil were thrilled to have secured a coach of Wilson’s calibre.

“His experience and expertise will undoubtedly lead us to a successful season in 2024,” a club statement read.

“Darryl brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the club, with a passion for the sport and a track record of success, his coaching career is testament to his dedication to the game.

“With his leadership, we’re excited for the positive impact he’ll bring to our team and this season’s prospects.”

The return of home-grown talent Rylee Smith to Nullawil was also confirmed last week.

Smith returns after consecutive premierships with Kerang in the Central Murray, also winning the Blues’ senior best and fairest this year.

It continued an exodus from Kerang. Michael Dalrymple, Hayden Hall, Adam Hunter and Michael Runciman were all set to join Newstead next season, while both Troy Coates and Troy Davis announced retirements.

Tigers sign recruits

GOLDEN Rivers club Macorna have announced the addition of three senior players to next year’s squad.

Oscar Donn and Johnny Dawes are set to pull on the yellow and black, along with Laing Whinfield, who will return to his home club.

Whinfield enjoyed a stellar season this year with Cowra, where he was not only best afield in a 29-point premiership win, but also won the senior best and fairest.

Donn, who previously played with VAFA club Old Scotch and St Kilda City, will join Whinfield in the Tigers’ midfield.

Key-position player Dawes, from VAFA side St Bedes/Mentone, will help fill a void deep in the forward line.

Re-signings at Marcorna included reigning best-and-fairest Lachlan Ritchie, Malcolm Neiwand, Toby Whinfield, Michael Roberts, Xavier Wishart, Hunter Anset and Fergus Bear.

Bulldogs return to kennel

TYNTYNDER are starting to shape their list for their first season under senior coach Jack O’Rourke, re-signing several key players in recent days.

Elia Ware, Zac Denham, Isaiah Bull, Harry Simpson, Angus Crowe, Patrick Crowe, Elliott Broad and Cayden Crowe all recommitted for the next 12 months, and more signings were to be announced in the coming weeks.
