TAFE aiming to fill job gaps

SUNITAFE says it is helping fill gaps in the Mallee workforce by upskilling people for the jobs the region needs most.

The Victorian Skills Plan, which was launched last year, uses expert insights and comprehensive data to illustrate how the state will grow and innovate in the coming years.

The updated plan was released on Tuesday with data projections into 2026.

The top five occupations which will require new workers in the Mallee by 2026 were aged and disabled carers (229 new workers), general clerks (148), crop farmers (127), livestock farming (107) and registered nurses (95).

SuniTAFE said it remained well positioned to help fill the job demands, as it currently offered courses that taught the skills needed for each occupation.

General manager of education delivery Wayne Ketchen believed TAFE training would be vital in meeting the region’s growing demands

“Our role in providing quality vocational training aligned to industry needs means that SuniTAFE is the first choice in training for the care economy and healthcare sector in the region,” he said.

“Combined with our SMART Farm campus and programs aligned to Clean Economy initiatives, SuniTAFE is a focal point for training in the Victorian Skills Plan framework.”

SuniTAFE chief executive Brett Millington said many of the VET courses offered, which aligned to each of the in-demand occupations, were free.
