MURRAY DOWNS MEN
THE third annual 36-hole, two-person Ambrose tournament held at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club last weekend was a huge success.
The Ambrose format of competition is proving to be very popular, as was shown with the 172 players who took part in the tournament, with visitors coming from all parts of the country.
The two-day event was broken up into scratch and net competitions, allowing for a pair of lower handicap players to take on the challenging layout and other players to compete for the net prizes.
The men’s overall 36-hole scratch winners were Horsham pair Jeremy and Cassey Schmidt, after getting away to a great start on Saturday, by shooting a 10 under par round of 62.
They then backed it up on Sunday with a five under par 67, to finish with a two-day total of 15 under par, 129.
In second position, all on 138, were fellow Horsham pair Travis Patten and Chris Dalley (70 and 68), Ballarat’s James Quayle and Hayden Budds (70 and 68) and Murray Downs pair James McLean and Craig Fletcher (67 and 71).
In the net section, the 36-hole winners were a pair of former locals Thomas Dullard and Josh Free, with scores of 62 and 66 (128).
Matt Lenton and Andrew Robertson from Ballarat finished as runners-up, on 128.5 (65.75 and 62.75), by way of a countback system, ahead of father-son combination Lars and Kit Neher (62.25 and 66.25) from Patterson River.
In the separate daily competitions, the best net score on Saturday was 62.75, which was shot by Shaun McArthur and Aaron Braeckmans from Midlands.
They finished just ahead of Murray Downs pair Steve Emberson and Grag Armsden on 63.25, with Portland pair Jamie Crow and Clinton Foster finishing third with 63.5.
Sunday’s event was taken out by Robert Hoskin (Coomealla) and Kim Sorensen (Thurgoona) with 64.25 and were followed by John Woods (Woodlands) and Dean Wills (Curlewis) on 64.5, with Jonathon Hirst and Brenton Cruickshank (Murray Downs) the next best with 64.75.
In the women’s section, the overall 36-hole scratch winners were Lisa Brady and Dione Heppell from Murray Downs, who finished with two consistent rounds of 79 and 77 (156).
The 36-hole net event was won by another Murray Downs pair in Lynne Bishop and Barb Cabb with two equal rounds of 68.5 (137).
Saturday’s best score of net 69 came from Kerry Beggs and Vicky Walsh from Mitta-Mitta, while Sunday’s best net score of 69.25 was submitted by another Murray Downs pair in Carol Wiseman and Marg Moore.
Last Thursday’s Stableford competition was played across two divisions, with 38 points being the best score of the day from Mark Warren (10) and Gerard Moloney (21), with both players taking out their respective divisions.
Runners-up prizes in each division went to Justin Thompson (11) in Division 1 and Vic Haythorpe (22) from Ingle Farm Golf Club with 37 each.
Shrek Petersen led the ball run down, also on 37 points, which went down to scores of 33, while the nearest the pins were claimed by Rob Hinton on the second, Justin Thompson on the fifth, Ron Munro on the 11th and Wayne Wisby on the 15th.
In Tuesday’s Stableford competition, Sean Baumgurtel (6) collected the major prize with 36 points, ahead of Rob Hinton (20) with 34 and Graeme Mathiske (16) with 32 points, to each receiving a ball for their efforts.
MURRAY DOWNS LADIES
KATHY Parkinson regularly features in the winners’ lists at the Murray Downs Golf & Country Club and on Wednesday, she again led the field with the best score for the day.
Kathy scored 38 points from her 14 handicap to win Division 1 from another consistent A Grader, Lois Carnie (18) with 34 points.
The winning Division 2 score was 32 points with octogenarian Marie Cruickshank (32) winning on a countback ahead of new golfer Jo Dillon (42).
Lisa Brady, Mag Kiley and Sue Davis all scored 33 points to lead the ball pool, which went down to scores of 32 points.
Kathy Parkinson added to her bounty by taking out the jackpot on the par-three 11th hole, with Lyn Merrett, Bev West and Lisa Brady successful on the other par threes.
LAKESIDE
A STABLEFORD event was held again this week, with Jean Youl (21) finishing as the top player of the day with 38 points, with Lois Heil (33) with 27 points and Joan Foster (27) with 25 points leading the ball rundown.
The nearest the pins went the way of Jean on the Lake Boga Cafe 3rd hole and the Lake Boga Marine 7th hole, while Joan claimed the HEC 12th hole and Laurel Dewhurst was closest on the J.Foster 18th.
Next week is Pink Day, which looms as a fun day for all, with a 9.30am assembly for a 10am start.
LALBERT
ON Sunday, a Stableford event was held at the Lalbert Golf Club, with Scott Worner coming out on top with 33 points, ahead of Stuart McGregor on 31 points and Maurice Meehan on 30 points, with Stuart McGregor taking home the nearest the pin.
This Sunday, the club will hold the North West Ag Day, which is a two-person Ambrose, any combination event.
