Mully’s place entertains

Earlier this month on Sunday afternoon may have been a bit chilly outside, but it was certainly warm inside the Swan Hill Town Hall as the community gathered for a free unplugged acoustic performance from Grim Fawkner.

Originally from Moree in western New South Wales, the independent artist came to regional Victoria via Tasmania.

He has played hundreds of shows in various venues across multiple continents, self-released two singles, four EPs, one live album and one comedy Christmas album (A Very Grim Christmas) and is currently recording his debut full-length album, For The Edification of Clementine.

Grim said he was a regional Victorian muso and that was “the bloody way he liked it”.

“We are standing in the town hall and this is the first place I ever played in Swan Hill with Casey Chambers on her Campfire tour five years ago,” Fawkner said.

“This is probably the third time I have played in Swan Hill.

“It seems to be becoming a hotspot and I’m sure I will be coming back all the time.”

When talking about his music he said it didn’t matter if it had a country feel, a ballad or even a folky feel “as long as it entertains m”e.

“Can you imagine going to work and singing songs that you don’t like every day?”

“That sounds like the worst,” Fawkner said with a laugh.

“I would rather sing the right songs that I think are pretty funny, heartwarming or whatever I feel like I need on the day.

“And chances are there is someone in the audience that says ‘yes, I need a funny song too’.”
