Clean sweep for Central Rivers

THE Central Rivers junior interleague teams made a clean sweep at the weekend, with both the under-16s and under-18s successful in their respective matches against North Central and Heathcote District.

A combination of the best players from both the Central Murray and Golden Rivers football leagues, Central Rivers were coached by two of the Central Murray’s finest in Callan Beasy (under-16s) and Marcus Demaria (under-18s).

Both competitions were not playing due to the King’s Birthday long weekend.

The under-16s kicked off the weekend on Friday night under lights at Boort, with Central Rivers defeating North Central by 56 points – 14.12 (96) to 6.4 (40).

Central Rivers were quick out of the blocks, booting four goals to one in the opening quarter, before extending their lead to 33 points by the main break.

While North Central fought back in the second half, with a more competitive display in general play, they were still no match for the Central Rivers boys, who recorded a comfortable first victory as a combination.

The under-18s side were also successful, albeit in much closer circumstances, holding on for a four-point win over a fast-finishing Heathcote District at Gunbower on Saturday morning.

Up by 11 points at the final change, they let their opponents back into the contest with four final-quarter goals, but secured a 7.15 (57) to 8.5 (53) win.

Inaccuracy in front of goal plagued the Central Rivers side, especially in the second half, with the combined team kicking just three goals from 13 scoring shots after the main break.
