The government has slated $10 million for regional and coastal areas for recreational fishing, with up to 100 sites to be identified, as part of more than $25 million for upgrades across NSW waterways and regions, Ms Betts said.
Targeted works could include upgrading boat ramps and building new fishing facilities including platforms, kayak ramps, parking, access paths, fish cleaning tables and interactive signs.
“Recreational fishing is worth many millions of dollars to our local economies via retail, marine and tourism activities, not to mention what it means to the quality of life for locals,” Ms Betts said.
“Here in Murray we have some of the most spectacular outdoor experiences that NSW has to offer. Our pristine rivers provide the perfect environment for fishing, boating, camping and exploring for locals and visitors, and under a re-elected Liberal Nationals Government our waterways will be even more accessible for fishers and families alike.
“This is not only good news for those who love to explore the outdoors, it will give a real boost to our local economy by driving tourism, supporting local jobs and providing lifestyle benefits to families.
“The Nationals know fishing is one of the most popular pastimes in our neck of the woods, and we’re committed to giving all fishers and boaties a better deal,” she said.
“If the Liberal Nationals are re-elected, I can’t wait to see these upgraded facilities put to good use.”
Moama-based NSW Recreational Fishing Advisory Council member Karl Mathers said the commitment would be a huge boost to the region’s recreational fishing sector.
“This is a significant financial commitment to recreational fishing, and it’s tremendous news for fishers,” Mr Mathers said.
“All up, recreational fishing in New South Wales has around 1.6 million participants, contributes $3.9 billion to our national GDP and supports 14,000 jobs.
“At a regional level, it is a huge economic contributor and this funding will help increase those social and business benefits.
“Any improvement in access and infrastructure also means getting more kids and families out and about, enjoying our fantastic fishing spots and spending time together. It will also complement our existing programs like the Fish for Life program.”
The funding allocation will be managed by the Department of Primary Industries.
