GP training boost

SWAN Hill District Health has developed a program for GP registrars to have individualised exam coaching and training.

The health service held a small event last week to acknowledge the program’s joint $150,000 education research grant between SHDH, Kerang District Health, Rural Workforce Agency Victoria (RWAV) and Charles Sturt University.

Rural Doctors Association of Victoria president Dr Daniel Wilson spoke about SHDH’s “exemplar” model for training and attracting the next generation of general practitioners within the region.

This year, SHDH is hosting its highest number of GP trainees with six candidates undertaking their general practice training between the hospital and medical centre.

Executive director of medical services Associate Professor Rex Prabhu facilitated the event and spoke about the SHDH roadmap established to develop end-to-end GP training in Swan Hill.

“SHDH has been on an exciting workforce development journey for the past four years,” he said.

“The efforts from senior doctors and training supervisors as well as collaborating with partners such as RWAV, Charles Sturt University and the Department of Health Rural Generalist Division have paid us these dividends.

“We would like to keep this growing for years to come.”

The event also celebrated some other key milestones such as the development of a robust medical workforce, the tripling of GPs working at SHDH, taking the number of permanent ED generalists from four to 12 in the past four years and further investment into GP training.
