Options in bowling attacks

THE quality of the grand finalists’ fast bowling cartels are well known.

The Saints, led by skipper and SHDCA bowling average winner Holmes-Brown with Daniels, Sebastian and King, is potent, while the Bombers attack of Ryan Barnes and the McKnight boys has been just as good since Christmas.

However, the two captains highlighted their often-forgotten finger spinners, who provide great balance to their sides.

Saints spinners Dom Violi (11 wickets averaging 10.45) and Austin McKerrow (16 wickets averaging 15.75) tend to come on after the opposition top order has been blasted away and provide wily craft that middle to lower order batsman struggle with.

“They are crucial to us,” Holmes-Brown said.

“I’ll always turn to my spinners – they’ve been bowling in A Grade for a long time and know how to limit the batter’s scoring options.”

The Bombers have a similar spin partnership in left-arm spinner Declan Higgs and Rohan Oliver.

The pair usually bowl together throughout the middle overs, and their variety as a partnership gave Dickson confidence.

“Rohan (Oliver) bowls a tight line and can get through six to 10 overs before a batsman realises, whilst Higgsy (Declan) is the more attacking spinner who gives it a rip,” he said.

“It’s great to be able to use them in conjunction with each other and attack and defend at either end.”
