Young guns ready for big stage

YOUTH has been a big focus at the Bombers for the past couple of years, and their revival since Australia Day can be attributed to their young stars stepping up.

Bohden McKnight made the league team of the year on Wednesday night, while brother Ethan would be close to this season’s most improved bowler.

Couple that with Patrick Oliver at the top having a breakout season, it was now Dickson and his elder statesman teammates trying to keep up with the young bucks.

“We’ve got a 14-year-old wicketkeeper in Flynn McKnight who, along with his two brothers, have come along really nicely,” he said.

“Blokes like Rohan (Oliver) and myself have been around a long time and played in a few premierships together, so we’ve been trying to bring these kids on and let them take the club forward.

“Now that they’ve come on as quickly as they have, we’re the ones going for the ride.”

The Saints have their own young gun to in 15-year-old Charlie King.

He made his name in A Grade cricket last season with his bowling but has leapt forward in his development this year with the bat averaging 28.25, mostly at first drop.

Holmes-Brown lauded King’s maturity earlier in the week.

“He’s very talented – I always forget he’s only 15 years old – he’s just such a mature batter in the way he stays out there all day and not be fussed,” he said.
