The 19th Hole

MURRAY DOWNS MENS

James Downing eclipsed the field in last Saturday’s December monthly medal stroke competition held at Murray Downs.

Downing, playing from a handicap of 20, shot a great round of 83, to finish with a net score of 63, convincingly taking out the medal by four shots.

His round consisted of four double bogies, on holes 1, 2, 10 and 17 and an eagle three, on the 7th hole.

The closest player to him was James Beard (21) with net 67, taking out Division 3, with Andrew McLean (27) runner-up in this division on net 72.

Troy Gnitecki (16) was the winner of Division 2 over Mitchell Croft (17) by way of the countback system, with both players finishing with net 68s.

Division 1 was taken out by a visitor from the Camden GC, in Peter Nonnenmacher (10) with net 68, from Graeme Cox (9) on net 69.

The nearest the pins were claimed by Justin Thompson on the 2nd, Grant McNees on the 5th, Chris Conlan got the one on the 11th with a shot to within 74cm and Troy Gnitecki got the 15th.

Neville Brady, Sam Rovere and Leigh Paynter lead the ball rundown with net 71s, which went out to scores of net 73.

Sunday’s competition was a medley Stableford event, where Luke Tracey (26) shot the lights out with a score of 45 points to take out Division 2, from the very unlucky Noah Starrs (25) who shot an equally impressive score of 44 points.

Division 1 was a little more mundane with Daniel Cruickshank (3) coming in with 41 points, to be the best, from Scott Munro (11) on 38 points.

Other players required at least 36 points to be eligible for a golf ball, while the NTPs went to Scott Mathiske on the 2nd, Chris Waterson on the 5th, Jorgen Leschke on the 11th and Greg Cruickshank on the 15th.

Thursday last week saw a good-sized field take part in a Stableford competition, in three divisions, where a former member of Murray Downs and now from the Southern Golf Club, Glenn Palmer (13), recorded the day’s best score of 43 points to take out Division 1 from Ross Hastings (8) on 38 points.

Malcolm Talbot (17) was the best in Division 2 with 40 points over Joe Walsh (21) on 37 points, while in Division 3, it was taken out by Ian Gammon (25) with 42 points from Tom Wilkins (34) on 36 points.

Other players required at least 34 points to be in the ball competition and with nearest the pins, they went to Ray Power, Ross Hastings, Joe Walsh and Jonny Hirst on holes 2, 5, 11 and 15 respectively.

Friday’s nine-hole competition was taken out by Robyn Bett (22) with 21 points from Judy McMahon (33), who finished with the same score.

Tuesday’s competition was against par where Hugh Thompson (24) recorded the day’s best score of three up, followed by Noah Starr (22) at one up.

Scores of square and better were required in the ball rundown, while with the NTPs, Darryl Domaille claimed it on the 5th and Les McPhee fired one of his best shots to claim it on the 11th hole.

We are now into the final week of the Swan Hill Windows & Kitchens nine-hole summer competition, which will conclude at 4pm on Sunday.

Cadd Magic have maintained their slender lead of two points, over their closest rival The Golden Oldies, 397 to 395, with a gap of 11 points further back to the Pigeons.

As this is the final week of the current series, can Cadd Magic hold onto the lead they have held since the series commenced? All will be revealed at the presentations which will take place at 5pm on Sunday in the clubhouse.

MURRAY DOWNS LADIES

All of the competitors got into the spirit with many and varied Christmas outfits.
