Murray Downs back on top

LAKE Boga Bowls Club has gone 2-0 after an 8-4 victory away from home in the top-of-the-table clash against Moulamein.

It was no easy win for Boga, though, with Moulamein winning two of the three rinks, but a strong performance by Rod Wickham and his team of Terry Haw, Anthony Shields and David Jonkers managed to sneak a victory.

Wickham’s rink won 39 shots to 18 to drag his side over the line in the thriller that ended 80 shots to 79 in Boga’s favour.

Dennis Compton and his team did their all for Moulamein, winning rink one 35-17, but it wasn’t enough and Moulamein suffered their first loss of the season.

At Nyah District, Murray Downs confirmed their status as premiership favourites as the defending champions comfortably handled Nyah 12-0 to go the top of the ladder for the first time this season.

Murray Downs star Joshua Thornton and his rink were the dominant force, winning 42 shots to 12.

The other two rinks were a closer affair, but Nyah was no match for the powerhouse of the competition.

In the weekend’s other match, Swan Hill Racecourse bounced back into form with a 12-0 win over cross-town rivals Swan Hill.

Coming off a 10-2 loss to Murray Downs last week, Norm Smith and his charges were out to prove that they’d still be a force to reckon with this season.

It was a closer contest than the scoreline suggests, Swan Hill sticking with Racecourse on all three rinks, but could never quite find a way to translate that on to the scoreboard.

The two remaining undefeated teams in the competition will face off if the weather permits this weekend, when Lake Boga are drawn to travel to Murray Downs.
