New flood warning as rain toll mounts

A MINOR flood warning has been issued for the Murray River downstream of Barham to Wentworth, as the impact of relentless rain continues to mount.

The State Emergency Service says the river at Boundary Bend is also expected to reach the minor flood level late this month.

Flood waters from the Murray River combined with flood waters from the Edward River have already resulted in minor flooding along the Murray River at Wakool Junction.

The Murray River at Wakool Junction may reach about 9.70 metres late next week, while Boundary Bend may reach the minor flood level of eight metres about October 25 to 17.

High river levels may cause flooding in areas close to rivers and streams and some agricultural land may be vulnerable to flooding.

Farmers have been urged to consider moving livestock and machinery to higher ground. Consequences of flooding along the Murray River are expected to vary between NSW and Victoria.

Further rainfall is forecast from Thursday into Sunday, which may lead to further river level rises. Predictions will be revised as rainfall is observed.

Residents have been urged to monitor weather forecasts and river levels online by visiting www.bom.gov.au/vic/warnings.

There will be moderate to major flooding in already flooded rivers in NSW, Victoria, and possibly Tasmania and southern Queensland.

Swan Hill has already recorded 24.8mm in the first six days of the month, surpassing the 22.4mm average for the month, with a further 6mm forecast tomorrow before a dry spell into next Tuesday.
