BALRANALD’S Jason Gillbee has taken another step towards realising his AFL dream with selection in the 2022 NAB League Boys Team of the Year last week.
Gillbee, who plays with the Bendigo Pioneers, was selected on the wing following a standout season, which included an eye-catching Under 18 National Championships with the Allies. Potential No.1 draft pick Will Ashcroft told AFL.com Gillbee was his toughest opponent in the national championships.
Gillbee, a 192cm onballer, was one of just two Pioneers to be selected in the team after playing 10 games and averaging almost 22 disposals in the NAB Boys League this season.
CATTANACH TO LEAD LIONS
HAY will have a new senior coach in 2023 after announcing Mick Cattanach will take the reins from David Webb.
Cattanach will be a non-playing coach, with a clear plan of developing the abundance of talented younger players at the club, Hay president George Auldist told The Guardian.
“We’re really happy and excited to announce Mick as our senior coach for next season,” Auldist said. “We have a really good culture at the club with a great group of kids and young families and we feel that recruiting from within will only help ensure our culture remains strong.”
Cattanach has previously coached the club’s under-14 team, as well as coaching the Lions’ under-17 netballers, and will bring with him an ability to develop and mould the club’s youth into a formidable senior football team.
“Mick is a really well liked and respected member of our football club and will bring a big focus on the development and retainment of the younger members of the club,” Auldist said.
WARE TOP DOG
ELIA Ware has capped off a strong first season in the red, white and blue, claiming Tyntynder’s seniors best-and-fairest award at the weekend.
Ware played all but two games for the Dogs, with the ruckman claiming the award ahead of Jason Eagle, whose 68-goal season was rewarded with the runner-up award.
Veteran Reece Collins claimed the reserves award ahead of Hugh Broad, while Liam White edged out Sam Bull to be named the Colts’ best and fairest.
The A Grade netball best-and-fairest award was won by Toni Rivett, while Milly Op’t Hoog backed up her strong performance in the Central Murray A Reserve League award by winning Tyntynder’s club award. In B Grade, Kim Calvert was the winner ahead of Rachelle Cameron, while Jade Featherby was named B Reserve club best and fairest.
