WOORINEN’S finals journey came to a disappointing end on Sunday, with the Tigers going down by 12 goals against Lake Boga.
“Finals netball brings a whole different game – you’re not looking for big wins or trialling combos,” Lake Boga playing coach Anna Archie said.
“It’s survival of who scores their own and a couple of extras.”
The Pies seemed to find their rhythm early, scoring three goals in quick succession before the Tigers had a chance to get a shot through the ring. But the Tigers didn’t let their slow start deter them, trailing by only one goal at the first break.
The defensive pressure from the Pies ramped up in the second quarter. Pies defenders Jemma Meehan and Felicity Robertson were working particularly hard in the ring, forcing the Tigers to pass when they weren’t ready and creating a lot of turnovers.
By half-time, the score read 20-12 in favour of the Pies.
The Tigers kept their heads up despite the deficit, but an injury to playing coach Olivia Jones in the third quarter didn’t help matters. Jones came off the court and returned only for a short time in the last quarter.
The final whistle sounded time on Woorinen’s 2022 season.
“It was always going to be a really physical match and one that we were ready for,” Archie said.
“The girls really just settled into our own game and knew when we started to relax things would happen for us.”
Lake Boga will now being looking to Sunday’s first semi-final match against Balranald.
After losing to the Mallee Eagles in the qualifying final, the Roos will be out to redeem themselves this weekend against the Pies. But Archie is confident in her team’s ability.
“I trust our girls will deliver and just keep chipping away like we have all season,” she said.
