YOUNG people wanting to make a difference in Swan Hill or Robinvale have been encouraged to join Swan Hill Council’s Novo Youth Council and Robinvale Youth Group.
Novo and RYG are groups of passionate young people who meet weekly to plan low-cost and no-cost events, discuss issues impacting youth, and ensure the voices of young people are heard.
Robinvale-based youth support officer Jess Kei said these groups provide a platform for young people to advocate for change and shape the future of their community.
“You’ll have the chance to make your voice heard, develop valuable leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills to enhance your resume or university application,” she said.
“Also, connect with new people, and, of course, enjoy free food – because let’s be honest, the best ideas come when there’s great food on the table,” Ms Kei said.
Novo Youth Council meets at Youth Inc, 50-52 Campbell Street, Swan Hill, on Tuesdays from 3.45pm to 5pm.
RYG meets every Wednesday from 3.30pm to 4.30pm at Robinvale Learning and Community Hub, 88 George Street, Robinvale.
Swan Hill-based youth support officer Stephanie Hartshorn highlighted the impact of joining a youth group.
“In high school, I joined the Novo Youth Council to gain volunteer hours and contribute to the community,” she said.
“It boosted my university applications and was a great topic in scholarship interviews.
“Joining is easy – just one hour a week – and it builds skills like event management, advocacy and community engagement.
“Youth groups give you a voice, connect you with like-minded people, and let you make real change.
“I encourage others to get involved and make a difference.”
Novo member Ned Ryan shared his experience.
“I love being part of Novo because I get to meet amazing new people and do activities with them and the community, like the 2025 summer camp,” he said.
“It was incredible to work together and have a great time at the beach.”
Another long-term Novo member, Angelica Watson, emphasised her personal and professional growth.
“I’ve been an active member of the Novo Youth Council for six years,” she said.
“I’ve felt so supported and gained opportunities I never thought possible.
“I’ve also built incredible connections with young people and members of the community.”
