Boga too strong for improved Nyah

Boga came away with a solid 56-40 win against Nyah-Nyah West United at the weekend, despite tough defensive performances from both sides.

The home side Magpies were comfortable leaders from the start, but United were never far behind.

By the first quarter break, Boga were leading by five, and then at halftime were up 31 to 22.

The home side had a particularly strong third quarter, doubling Nyah’s score but the visitors fought back in the last to outscore Boga by a goal.

To have such a close match after a 2021 wooden spoon year for United, shows the difference a few additions have made to the team.

Playing-coach Laura Anderson was a standout against the Eagles last week, and alongside newbies Matika Mitchell and Zoe Gray, as well as some of last year’s talent like Shania Decker, Nyah are a tough side to beat.

Anderson was again a steadying force through the centre, teaming up well with an in-form Decker and WA Teina Lusty.

Nyah’s Mitchell and Gray put in superb efforts in defence against Boga’s powerful Hepburn sisters, and up the attacking end, Bridie Curran and Megan Thorneycraft displayed their exceptional accuracy in goals.

But Boga seem to be one of the teams to beat this season – remaining undefeated, with the Good Friday draw against Swan Hill.

The consistent side were unchanged throughout the game except for a short injury change after a collision between Boga’s WD Emma Peacock and Nyah’s Anderson.

Briana Gilbert came on into WD for the rest of the third but Peacock was back in form by the last.

Next week will see Boga attempt to continue their undefeated streak as they play Woorinen. The Magpies should do well but they will be tested by some experienced additions to Woorinen’s side.

Nyah will host Tyntynder, with their fantastic A-grade side sure to bring their best netball to the court for a likely win given their current form.
