Rivalry for a good cause

WITH lights flashing and donation jars jingling, the Nyah-Nyah West and Koraleigh Country Fire Associations (CFA) were out on the main street of Nyah on Thursday and Friday, collecting money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

With each CFA on their own respective sides of the road, it is a rivalry that dates back many years.

“It’s good how we’ve got a bit of a rivalry going over who can raise the most money,” Koraleigh CFA’s Liam Hoare said.

Mr Hoare also has a personal connection to the cause, having spent time in the Royal Children’s Hospital as a child.

“The Royal Children’s has done a lot for kids around the area, like me,” he said.

While the “winner” won’t be confirmed until donations have been counted, Nyah-Nyah West CFA’s Laurie Connor says historically they have taken it out.

“They (Koraleigh CFA) usually get ahead in the morning as people head into Swan Hill, and in the afternoon we catch up and pass them, and we normally win,” Mr Connor said.

Despite their competitive natures, both CFAs agree that it’s a great thing to do for a great cause.

“It’s a great charity we are doing it for,” Mr Connor said.
