IT will be a very different Calivil United outfit that will take the field when the 2022 season kicks off tomorrow, after a substantial recruiting campaign by the Demons.
Former Huntly midfielder Jack Daley will take the reins this season after a disappointing 2021, that saw the Demons fall to eighth position with a two-win, nine loss record.
This year is shaping up to be a far different Calivil United however, with at least 11 impactful players all joining the club during the off season – many of them from Daley’s former club Huntly.
While the loss of reigning best and fairest Brady Childs from their on-ball unit will hurt, the Calivil United midfield will still have a strong look about it, with both Jack and Ben Daly, Blayne Ryan-Storey, Lachlan Brook and Phil Ryan all expected to be a part of the Demons midfield rotations – while Alex Daniels will also assume the role of number one ruckman, with former Lockington big man Corey Pearce to play a supporting role.
With a clear emphasis on boosting their midfield depth through their recruiting, it’s no surprise that Daley has identified that area of the ground as being one to watch in the months ahead.
“I think speed will be one of our biggest strengths – we’re going to be young and fit, so we’ll be just looking to use that to our advantage,” Daley said.
“Because we’ll be young and fit, I’d be hoping we’ll take the game on where we can and use the corridor with our quick brand of footy.”
One area that will need to be addressed from last season is their capacity to score, with the Demons failing to kick more than three goals on six occasions last season.
Although that statistic will be cause for concern, it’s hoped the recruitment of Huntly full-forward Jacob Greenwood to partner last year’s leading goalkicker Jake Lawry will alleviate that problem.
