Nyah District cricket young gun helps secure victory

BALRANALD sporting young gun Drew Lloyd played a crucial role in Nyah District’s winning Swan Hill District Cricket Association (SHDCA) A Grade side for 2021/22, beating Woorinen by 51 runs.

“The team definitely did a very good job, everyone contributed,” Lloyd said.

The 19-year-old was man of the match for the game, bowling 3/44 off 22 overs that included six maidens. He also contributed with the bat scoring 18 runs, which was the third-highest total for the side.

Lloyd said despite playing in some winning grand final sides before, this victory was the first where he had also been man of the match.

“It felt pretty good actually since last year when Woorinen clipped us,” he said.

“It was pretty unreal to be honest.”

Lloyd credits his passion and skill for the sport to his dad, who he says is probably his biggest influence.

“My dad has always been a pretty big sports fan himself, so he has sort of pushed us into every sport possible,” Lloyd said.

“He wanted us to get out and do a bit and not sit around.

“He’s retired (from sport now), but he still goes to all my games and helps me out if I’m doing something wrong.”

While footy will be Lloyd’s number one priority heading into the new season, he says a back-to-back premiership may well be in the cards next cricket season.

“We will definitely be up with it again.”
