Nyah District bounces back to skittle Saints

SWAN HILL DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION ROUND 10 MATCH REPORTS

NYAH DISTRICT 10-109 defeated ST MARY’S-TYNTYNDER 10-85

Nyah District booked themselves a ticket into the semi-finals at the weekend with a hard fought 24-run win over St Mary’s-Tyntynder.

The Demons reversed the result from last Friday night’s Kookaburra Cup Final, with the victory seeing them a game clear on top of the SHDCA A Grade ladder.

Batting first, Nyah District quickly found themselves in trouble, losing wickets consistently as the Saints bowling attack continued the good form they’ve displayed all season. Corey Daniels led the way early, picking up the all-important wickets of Charlie Boulton and Mitch Grinham, while Dom Violi cleaned up the tail, taking four of the last five dismissals.

It wasn’t until skipper Ben Shadbolt came to the crease that things settled for the Demons, with Shadbolt playing a fine captain’s knock of 35 not out to get his side to a defendable – albeit below par – score of 109, with his 40-run ninth wicket partnership with A Grade debutant Max Thompson proving to be the decisive moment in the game.

St.Mary’s-Tyntynder made a steady start to their innings, with the Saints getting to 22 before Riley Daniels (10) nicked one through to Justin Toomey. From that moment on, Nyah District took control, with Charlie Boulton (5-19 off 9.4 overs) and Ben Shadbolt (3-19 off 10 overs) ripping through St.Mary’s top and middle order.

Jake Foster (29) played a lone hand with the bat and threatened to single handily get his team over the line, but when Charlie Boulton got one through his defence the resistance was over, with St.Mary’s-Tyntynder eventually being bowled out for just 85 – their lowest completed score of the season.

ULTIMA-TUF 9-145 lost to WANDELLA 5-147

Ultima-TUF’s finals hopes have been dashed, with their five-wicket loss to Wandella all but ending their season.

Although still mathematically possible, the Roodogs (and RSL) would now need to win their remaining three matches, and rely on one of the Saints, Bombers or Tigers to lose all three of theirs.

After winning the toss and batting, Ultima-TUF’s top order all made starts, with Will Nelson making a patient 11 off 40 balls at the top of the order, while Ben Shepherd (30), Josh Waldron (36) and Kyle Symons (36 not out) all getting among the runs.

Unfortunately for the home side, too many players failed to capitalise on starts as they finished 9-145 from their 50 overs.

With their season on the line, Ultima-TUF came out breathing fire with the ball, with Jordan King ripping through the Bombers top order to have the visitors reeling at 4-25.

That was until Bohden McKnight and Luke Murray set about their rescue mission, with McKnight going on to score an unbeaten 77 and Murray a supportive 32 from 90 balls, in a match winning 101-run, fifth wicket partnership.

King would finish as the pick of the bowlers for Ultima-TUF, taking 3-34 from 14 overs, as Wandella passed the Roodogs score five-down and with three overs to spare.

SWAN HILL 10-83 lost to WOORINEN 5-85

Woorinen did what was required against the lowly Swan Hill at the weekend, registering a five-wicket win and picking up a vital six points in the process.

Although it was an improved performance on their previous few weeks from the Swans, they were still no match for the reigning premiers.

Swan Hill may have only contributed 83 runs on the scoreboard, but importantly they played patiently, batting out 41.2 overs before the close of their innings. This was no doubt an improvement on their recent performances, with Alan Hatcher (25) and captain Cal Noonan (21) leading the way. Jacob Hatcher was another who dug in, batting for 84 balls in an ultra-patient performance that enabled his teammates to score around him.

Robert Rush returned to the Woorinen bowling attack with three wickets, while Zac Ryan also impressed with the ball, taking 3-16 off 7 overs.

Despite requiring just 84 runs for victory, the Tigers got off to a shaky start, losing in-form batsmen Marcus Mangiameli (4) and Mitch Uhlhorn (4) early, before Cooper Fox (32) and Darren Rushton (19) put on a 40-run partnership to steady the ship.

When Rushton departed with the score on 52, it was left to Fox to guide Woorinen home – which he almost did until Ian Schodde disturbed Fox’s woodwork with the Tigers just nine runs from victory. It mattered little in the end however, with the visitors cruising home to a comfortable win.
