All junior and senior matches in the Swan Hill & District Cricket Association were abandoned over the weekend, after heavy rain on Thursday and Friday made many turf wickets unplayable.
All senior matches were eventually called off on Saturday morning, with over 50% of turf pitches deemed too wet for play to begin.Swan Hill & District Cricket Association president Greg Cruickshank told The Guardian that it wasn’t a decision that was made likely. “It was a very reluctant decision,” Cruickshank said.
“We’d always like to see cricket played, but with more than half of the games compromised we really didn’t have a choice in the end – the rules state that if that’s the case, then all cricket is off.”
SHDCA action will resume on Friday night with the Kookaburra Cup Grand Final between Nyah District and St.Mary’s-Tyntynder under lights at the Swan Hill Recreation Reserve – as well as the Under 11’s and Under 16’s at various grounds across the region.
