The 19th Hole January 21

MURRAY DOWNS MEN’S

TRISTAN Ramadge absolutely blitzed the field in last Sunday’s event against “Par”. Ramadge, playing off a handicap of 19, finished with the excellent score of 10 up, which was 6 shots better than the next best score of 4 up, which was recorded by Leighton Dullard, who was also playing from a 19 handicap. In doing so, Ramadge collected the main prize on offer in Division 2, with Dullard finishing as runner-up.

Division 1 was a lot closer, with one of our very promising juniors in Charlie King (14) coming out on top through the count-back system with a score of 3 up, with Shane Ingram (12) finishing on the same score. Other players required a score of at least 1 up to get a ball, while the nearest the pins went to James McLean on the 5th, his father Malcolm McLean (Corowa Golf Club) on the 11th and Tristan Ramadge topped off a great day, winning on the 15th.

Last Saturday was the first round of the LJ Hooker “Summer Cup”, which saw a very good field of golfers taking part in the “Par” competition. The best score of the day was 6 up, which was recorded by Jordan Weekley (12). Weekley took out Division 1, with our President Colin Hedwards (13), who finished at 3 up, finishing as runner-up.

The men’s Captain, Mick Kiley (17), must have received some golfing ability as a gift at Christmas, as he has hit a purple patch of form early in 2022. He took out Division 2, with 2 up, from Ben Smith (19) at 1 up. Division 3 went to Ashley Edwards (26) with 4 up, with Josh Gadsden (31) the next best in this division, with a score of 1 up. Scores of square and better were required in the ball run-down. Mark Warren claimed the nearest the pin on the 5th, while Andrew Cameron did likewise on the 11th, as did Andrew McLean on the 15th. Jordan Weekley is currently leading the Summer Cup with 42 points, from Ashley Edwards on 40 and Col Hedwards on 39.

Last Thursday, before the sound and light show and 20mm of rain forced the majority of players off the course, saw Mitchell Croft (27) come in with a score of 42 points, to be the best of those that actually finished their round.

In Tuesday’s stableford competition, Division 1 was taken out by Chris Hodgson (16) of 36 points, from Graeme Mathiske (14) on 35 points. In Division 2, another one of our very promising juniors in Tynan Perry (22) came in with a very good score of 38 points, but he was pipped at the post by Francesco Cianci (31) from the Latrobe Golf Club, who handed in a card with 42 points. Others required at least 33 points to be in the ball comp. A visitor from The Ridge Golf Club in Bruce Tilt took out the NTP on the 5th hole, while Chris Hodgson was the closest on the 11th and Murray Coon had a good shot into the 15th.

The annual Bailey Ag two-person Ambrose event will be running on Australia Day. The fields are filling very quickly, but at the time of writing, there are still spots available in the morning side of the event.

Also, the second series of the Swan Hill Windows & Kitchens 9-hole Summer Competition commenced this week. There is still time to enter a team, but it’s suggested you get it in before Sunday, January 23.

Other upcoming events include the 2022 Reciprocal Tournament, which will be held over the weekend of January 29 and 30. At the time of writing, there are still a few spots available, but check with the pro shop for availability. Also, the 2022 Seniors Tournament is scheduled for February 21 and 22. This is normally a very popular event, so don’t hesitate in getting your entry in.MURRAY DOWNS LADIES’

TWO ladies had exciting results at Murray Downs Golf and Country Club last Saturday. Firstly, Jill McIndoe (22) scored an amazing 7 up in the par event to win the major prize of the day. McIndoe’s score equated to a scratch score of 86, her best ever at Murray Downs.

The second highlight of the day was a hole-in-one for Dione Heppell. Dione hit her five iron perfectly to find the hole on the 151m 2nd hole.

Kristy Gordon (22) with 4 up took out the runner-up prize in Division 1, while in Division 2, Jenice Krahnert (27) and Elaine Brown (29) both scored 3 up, with Robyn Bett and Jenny Ford also scoring 3 up to lead the ball pool. Suzanne McLellan collected the nearest the pin prizes on both the 5th and 11th, while Marg Moore was the most accurate on the 15th.

Dione Heppell was still on a high from Saturday and scored 1 up from her 11 handicap to win Sunday’s event.

Milder weather enticed 63 competitors onto the course on Wednesday, with the great course condition producing some hot scores on the day. Kerry Gammon plays off a 30 handicap, which will no doubt be reduced, after she put together 41 stableford points to win C Grade from Bev Kelly (48) on 39 points.

Robyn Bett (29) is now in her third season at Murray Downs after learning her golf on the Mallee sand scrapes. She is now finding the course less daunting and put together 40 points to win B Grade from Tina King (29) on 38 points. Recently retired Jude Simmonds (20) scored 36 points and Mag Kiley (16) with 35 points were the A Grade winners, while Jo Williams and Marj Elston with 37 points and Lois Tippett with 35 points led the ball pool.

Chris Warburton collected the jackpot on the 11th, with Jill McIndoe, Norma Everett and Jan Butcher successful on the other par threes.
