NORTHERN DISTRICT
STATE qualifying events are ongoing at present, with the Sixty & Over titles contested last week at Barham.
Jeff Holloway (Barham) won the Men’s singles from Mick Carmody (Cohuna Golf), whilst Jenny Laursen (Barham) took off the Ladies’ title, with Marlene Orr (Kerang Golf ) runner up.
The title for novice bowlers was won by John Duckworth (Kerang) from Rick Ainsworth (Wakool) whilst the Ladies’ event was claimed by Peta Malseed (Barham) from Coral Jones (Cohuna).
On the weekend sectional play was staged at Cohuna Golf for the pairs title, with the Ladies’ section won outright by Jean Fairchild and Jenny Laursen (Barham), whilst the Men have section winners Fred Schmidt and Richard Burmeister (Pyramid/Barham) and Glen Faull-Steven Baker (Barham/Cohuna) to play a decider next Sunday.
Bowlers are reminded to try and support upcoming district tournaments, as many weren’t able to be played last year due to COVID.
Kerang Golf hosts a star day this weekend, followed by a Kerang event and then a star day at Cohuna Golf.
COHUNA GOLF
OUR ever-expanding Ladies’ competition had triples as the game of choice, with winners this week being Irene, Glenda and Noelene.
Many lined up again the following day for midweek pennant, where Div 1 missed out by just one shot against Cohuna. Better news from Division Two who defeated Leitchville, getting their season off to a fine start.
Wednesday night bowls had much better conditions for play, that is until it got dark and the lights wouldn’t work.
No worries, a quick change of greens and matches continued.
Winners on the night were Paul Robinson, Len Mathers, Elaine Bartram and Tracey Neil, all of whom adapted quickly to the change of pace.
We’re assured all is fixed for this week.
Our jackpot pairs on Thursday was keenly contested, with the major share of the poultry going the way of Peter Coates and new face in Neville Henery.
The repechage prizes to Craig Whittaker and John Pearson.
Names need to be in by Wednesday night for a 1pm start.
Pennant was Saturday, and the highlight, apart from all teams winning, was the stampede of kangaroos going straight through between both greens of bowlers.
An amazing sight but hopefully isn’t replicated again.
The Ones played Cohuna, with all rinks keenly contested.
Finishing well, the Golf sides forged ahead in all three matches, winning by seven, five and ten.
A good test for harder matches ahead, especially as a few absences have been tabled for coming games.
Also at home was the Navy squad, who are low-flying at present.
Against Kerang, potentially their biggest finals threat, two rinks were won against the one loss.
The Doug Peace combination took the honours with a fifteen shot win over Lindsay Hein, setting up the overall points grab.
Bower vouchers to Doug, Gary Farrant, Brian McLoughlan and Linda McManus.
The Whites headed to Pyramid with a few missing, but really acquitted themselves well.
Yvonne toppled Fred Schmidt by sixteen, a great effort, covering losses to Pat Quinn and Bruce Morrison.
Should be a beauty next week as both our Div 2 sides clash for early bragging rights.
The Gunny Golfers continued their fine season, with that man Gary Musgrove again to the fore with his rink, as they played Kerang.
He won by twenty, Mike Henshaw by ten, more than covering the birthday boy, Bernie Mawson’s loss.
Well done and off to Barham this week, don’t forget all the necessary paperwork.
At our club level, some forty members and friends enjoyed last Friday’s casual meal and social interaction, well done to Yvonne and her helpers.
The club singles is well advanced, with quarter final matches to be played within the next fortnight.
The area’s first night tournament, the Nutrien Hams is on this coming Monday, and more entries would be appreciated.
This precedes our Classic Fours on December 12th, which is always a top event.Pennant Teams for Saturday November 27:Division One:R. Fletcher (s) C. Whittaker, D. Orr, M. Carmody

KERANG GOLF
PENNANT on Saturday saw the local town derby in Div 1 with hosts Kerang proving too good for the Golf team, with two rinks up and a 70-44 score line.
Our Div 2 and Div 3 teams had good, close wins against Cohuna and Kerang 3.
This leaves the Div 3 team on top of the ladder.
In Div 1, Howard McClelland’s rink held on to defeat Damian Murray by one shot after leading 20 /11.
Frank Ritchie and Lloyd Murrays’ teams were defeated by Dale Hancock and Trevor Pocock.
Our Division 2 team had their first win of the season, against Cohuna at Cohuna, with Ronnie McKerrow’s rink the standout winning by 11, and Peter Niall winning by 8 shots and Alan Hird, in his first game as skipper, going down.
An overall result of 56-52 to Kerang Golf.
The undefeated Div 3 team continued their success with a win against town rivals, Kerang 3.
Noel Robertson lead the way with a 24/15 win, followed by Judy McKerrow with 24/18 and “Fonzy” Taylor down by 8, for a 65 to 58 win.
The Royal Hotel vouchers go to Ronnie McKerrow, Jeff Anderson, Brett Hipworth and Mick Pors for the second week in a row, with an 11 shot win – well done.
Our midweek team won their first game of the season last Wednesday, with a score of 43 shots to 28, against Cohuna 3.
Judy McKerrow’s team scored a big win, 31/9 with Joyce Tuohey’s rink going down 12/19, after a close game until the last two ends.
This is a great start for last year’s runners-up, with two new players joining the midweek ranks to strengthen their team.
Our Wednesday evening, Twilight Triples, was played in warmer conditions than the previous week and coming out on top was the Lloyds team with Lloyd Murray, Ronny and Brett Hipworth (sub for Phil Lloyd) winning the Choice Cut Meat vouchers with 31 points.
Runner ups were Auto Pro with Rod Pascoe, John “Mouse” Pay and Heath O’Brien scoring 29 points.
The “coveted” Encouragement Award was won by Kerang Mechanical, but they were not in attendance, so Gray’s Bakery were adjudged winners of this prize with 6 points.
The ladder after Round 2 is The Lloyds on top with 60 points, followed by Auto Pro 59, McAndo 58 and Royal Hotel 56.
Kerang Mechanical are wooden spooners at the moment.
Thursday bowls was attended by 16 players and two games of 2-4-2 Pairs was played.
A play-off between Laurie Gray and Howard McClelland against Carol Pay and Doug Hawke resulted in a win, on the last bowl, to Laurie and Howard.
The encouragement award was presented to Bryce McLeish and Wayne “Tige” Neville.
There were a few “on the wrong bias”, but no names mentioned.
On the social scene our first Royal night is scheduled for this Saturday November 27.
Numbers are needed as we have to book, so please put your names on the sheet on the noticeboard, if you wish to attend.
