The 19th Hole

Murray Downs men

THURSDAY, July 10 Stableford

Not a bad field for a Thursday with 66 players taking to the course in the medley Stableford competition.

In the blowy conditions, only four players finished ahead of their handicap with good scoring proving difficult for the rest.

Ron Munro (23) was the overall winner with 41 points, leading C Grade and all comers with 20 points on the front and 21 on the back.

In the grade’s rundown, A Grade had a couple of teenagers take out the top two spots.

Lucas Free (10) finished in first with 40 points and Tynan Perry (10) finished in second with 38 points, and young at heart Dale Smith (12) finished in third with 35.

B Graders struggled to beat the course, Kayne Walker (22) ended in front with 35 points, Terry McEwan (20) had 34, and Ian Read (19) was the last of the placegetters with 33.

Michael Pickert (26) came second behind Ron in C Grade with 37 points and Alex Maxwell (35) had 33. Jorgen Leschke almost saw another hole-in-one on the 11th hole, hitting it to 8cm.

Saturday, July 12 Par

Another member of the Perry family had a day out on Saturday.

With a vein of recent form, Jason Perry (14) led the field with +2 to take out the overall winner and B Grade prizes.

Jason has had a couple of good weekends of golf in a row, contributing strongly to his pairing advancing in the 4BBB Knockout competition the previous weekend.

In A Grade, Oli Rohde (7) finished with +2 in first and Troy Gnitecki (11) edged out a visitor to take second place.

Behind the overall winner, Justin Thompson (13) was second in B Grade with +1 and Barry Lacey (17) took the last place on the podium even with the card.

Dante Van Vuuren (31) took out the top place in C Grade even, Zachary Haywood (20) followed him up with -1 and Tony Ford (19) placed third with -1 also.

It was pretty impressive to see 97 players turn out, well done to all.

Sunday, July 13 Stableford

Only two grades of winners were allocated in the Sunday competition with the B Graders scoring better overall.

Jackson McNees (36) finished with 41 points and Mick Kiley (32) our men’s golf captain also doing well with 40 points in B Grade.

Tim Free (14) was the best in A Grade with 39 points with Josh Gadsden (16) the next best on 37.

Steven Davies (23) had a highlight on the 11th, hitting is close.

Only 51cm from the hole in the end, the only pity being that the jackpot hole had been raided just three days beforehand.

Tuesday, July 15 Par

Mick Kiley (31) followed up his good round on Sunday with another good round in the Tuesday par competition.

Once you have a good win, it does get you keen to get out again soon to repeat the effort and Mick proved he was up to it, finishing +2 and the overall winner.

Dion Carmichael (15) finished on top in A Grade +1 and Ross Hastings (10) second with 0.

Murray Downs women

THE exodus of grey nomads and world travellers has somewhat diminished the fields, with only 39 women enjoying a sunny winter’s day on Wednesday.

Bianca Brasser is well-known for her prowess on the hockey field but has recently taken up golf and has proven that she is up for the challenge.

On Wednesday, Bianca returned a score of 41 points from her 35 handicap. This score included four pars which equated to 16 points of the total and will undoubtedly reduce her handicap for her next outing. Jan McEwan (31) 36 points was next best in Division two.

In Division One, Suzanne Napier (26) 38 points and Terri O’Callaghan (18) 35 points were the leaders.

Maralyn Morrison, Jo Williams and Kylie Kelly were the ball winners and Pam Austerberry, Janelle Hogan, Belinda Gardner and Tamika Hogan were rewarded for accurate shots to the par 3s.

On Saturday, Deb Watson (39) square and Sarah Clark (17) 1 down were the leaders.

Barb Clark, Tamika Hogan, Jill Bath, Kristy Gordon and Jenice Krahnert led the ball pool and on Sunday, two 31 markers, Barb Cadd and Mary Johnson led a small field with 37 and 36 points respectively.

Golden girls winner on Friday was Kaye McAlpine 19 points with Marie Cruickshank 17 points next best. Libby Millar won the nearest the pin prize.

Murray Downs Dad’s Army

ON Monday, members played the back nine, with Kevin Maddy having another good round scoring 16 points, from two on 15 points, Barry Bishop and Barry Ingram and two on 13 points, Keith Plant and Brian Devlin. The rest of the field was 12 and below.

On Wednesday, members played the front nine, with Tom Wilkins coming in with a very fine score of 20 points, followed by two on 17 points, Barry Bishop and Rob Smith, and Barry Ingram 13 points, the rest 12 and below.
