THE Sonic Speedway fires up this weekend, with racing on both Saturday and Sunday highlighted by the Super Rods.
Sixteen Super Rods will be competing in the final two rounds of their Western Cup Series, with fast and furious racing expected as drivers fight for the last vital points.
Current VIC 1 Shaun Walsh will be hoping for a good run now his car is fixed, while Michael Coad will be trying to repeat his recent win at Darlington.
Jamie May and Stan Marco Jnr will be the other cars to watch, but don’t count out Allan Pitcher, Adrian Reick, Ash Marshall and Trevor Barclay who have as good a chance as any to end up on the podium.
Other drivers to watch include Sally Woolstencroft, Paul Singleton, Michael Grist and rookie Georgie Higgs, while Peter Duynhoven’s VW Herbie Beetle is always worth watching.
Three drivers will also make their debuts in the Super Rods tonight in Marcus Hocking, Aidan Gardiner and 16-year-old Oliver Wilson.
Lightning Sprints return this weekend and although they look like a smaller sprint car but with a smaller motor, are still very quick.
Current VIC 1 Ally Moore will be the driver the rest of the field will be chasing, while Maureen Sell will be hoping to go one better than her recent second at Nagambie.
Trevor Perry drives “very fast for an old bloke” and ex-local Aaron Stubbs knows the track well and along with Jason Lynn and Brenton Phillips, will be pushing the leaders all the way.
Local Standard Saloon driver Josh Campbell appears to have his rebuilt car sorted out after a heat win last meeting and will be pushing the Chivers boys – Austin, who won here last meeting and Lachie, who suffered car troubles after also winning a heat here last meeting.
Aaron Meakins is always up near the leaders, as is Kate Stuchberry, Daniel East and Jamie Angwin, while local Andrew Edwards is getting quicker each time he races.
Sports Sedans will be close, with the Kakoschke brothers – Reece and Bailey – along with Kevin Clark and Zac Swanson, all knowing the track well and are sure to be keen to finish the season with a win.
Local driver Tyson Gleeson will be keen to upstage them in front of his home crowd however.
Div 2 racers return with Ben Crittenden starting as favourite following his two heats and final win, with Beau Stuchbury, who finished with a second and two thirds in his heats and a second in the final last meeting expected to be pushing him all the way.
Trent Wilson also won a heat and ran third in the final, while Chris Greaves ran consistently all night and will be waiting for the chance to get on the podium.
Racing starts at 4pm on both days.
